The first 10 locomotives were built in 1923, and numbered 4073 - 4082, the number series continuing unbroken from the Star class.

The Class 14 for Train Simulator is a former Iron Horse House model, which has been updated to TS2014 standard, including new scenarios and improved exterior modelling. Unusually, D9504 was leased in 2005 from the Kent & East Sussex Railway to work on High Speed 1 around London, marshalling construction trains used during building of the route. The disappearance of these industries saw many models move to preserved railways in the UK, with five being exported to Belgium and Spain. However, their usefulness as shunting engines and top speed of 40mph (64 km/h) saw many sold to private industries such as iron and coal companies. The Class had an extremely short working life, not because of reliability but mainly because the duties for which they were originally intended starting to diminish. The mid-cab locomotives resembled the Clayton Type 1 (Class 17), but had a fixed wheel configuration – 0-6-0 – rather than bogies. Initially, 26 models were ordered in January 1963, expanded to 56 later that year. The loco operated on one engine while two engines are rebuilt in parallel, one by DTG engineers at Kidderminster and one on their behalf in Germany. In January 2017 the DTG announced that the engine needed to be replaced before D1015 could commit to further mainline running and an appeal for £50,000 was launched, which was rapidly filled and the share offer closed the following month. By December 2016 the DTG had entered into a running agreement with the SVR, when the locomotive returned following an issue experienced with the B engine during The Canterbury Champion rail tour. In 20 D1015 attended the diesel galas and in 2016 D1015 attended both the May diesel gala and the August ‘Western Weekend’. D1015 achieved main line certification in 2002, since which it has hauled over 60 rail tours as far as Penzance in the south and Kyle of Lochalsh in the north. In 1980 D1015 became the third locomotive to be acquired by the Diesel Traction Group (DTG), which already owned SVR residents D821 Greyhound and Hymek D7029.
